Many dentists are now using Botox® treatment for their patients for both oral and maxillofacial cosmetic and therapeutic use. Botox functions by obstructing the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, or the place where motor neurons are able to transmit a signal to muscle fiber to initiate a contraction. Acetylcholine is an organic chemical that functions as a neurotransmitter in humans. By obstructing the release of acetylcholine, Botox® will either scale down the power of the contraction of the muscle or will get rid of the contraction overall based on the dosage given. It causes temporary muscle apathy that can last up to three months. Slowly, the muscle will return to its original, full function.
Botox® has been used for the treatment of:
- Tempromandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)
- Bruxism (clenching and grinding of teeth)
- Orthodontic therapy relapse – helping to calm the hyperactive mentalis muscle that may be disrupting the alignment of teeth
- Retaining of removable prosthodontics – helping to calm the hyperactive muscles that may make this difficult
