Dental Hygiene, Cavity Prevention
The most common element of family dentistry is dental hygiene, cavity prevention. Teeth cleanings are performed by a dental hygienist. They remove built-up stains which help to illuminate your smile and refresh your breath, but more importantly they work to prevent cavities and tooth loss through the removal of plaque. Plaque is a sticky film that builds up on your teeth that can cause tooth decay as well as gum disease if it not removed by regular flossing, teeth brushing and professional teeth cleanings at your dentist office.
At Rock Family Dental, our dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants want to help you greatly reduce tooth pain, tooth decay, gum disease, potential tooth extractions and tooth implants that could be prevented through regular dental cleanings and the advancement of good oral hygiene habits along with affordable dental treatment!
Dental X-rays are a regular part of our prevention treatment processes at Rock Family Dental. They allow our dentists to expose tooth deterioration and disease that may not detectable during a regular dental exam. We use the status of your current oral health, age, risk for disease, and any signs and symptoms of oral disease to determine how often to perform x-rays.
Our dentists utilize X-Rays to check for cavities, gum disease, abscesses/cysts as well as to monitor wisdom teeth and detect any possibilities for oral diseases and tumors. They also use them to evaluate injured teeth and jaw growth, and to ensure that the affordable dental treatment they are providing is effective.
Fluoride is one of the best and safest ways to prevent dental caries which is the disease that leads to dental cavities and tooth decay. It has effectively reduced the number of cavities across the nation! There is bacteria in your mouth that feeds on the sugars in the foods and beverages you eat and drink. This produces acid that can wear away the tough, outer shell of your tooth called tooth enamel. This can lead to cavities. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that protects teeth by making them stronger and more resistant to acid. It not only reduces the risk of cavities, it can even help reverse early signs of decay.
At Rock Family Dental, fluoride rinse is a vital part of our prevention processes and affordable dental treatment. We also provide systemic treatments for those patients that are at a high risk of developing dental caries.
Fun Fact: Due to its success in preventing cavities, fluoride in community water was named a top public health achievement in the 20th century!
Be sure to select a toothpaste for your home that contains fluoride and that bears the ADA seal of approval!
So, you brush and floss regularly. Good for you! Those are in fact the best ways to help prevent cavities. But it’s not always easy to keep every tooth as clean as possible when there are so many grooves for bacteria to conceal itself. These are found especially in our molars, the back teeth we use to chew. Sometimes your dentist will use a dental sealant to protect those affected teeth. A dental sealant is a thin coating of dental material that is applied to your teeth to protect them from food and bacteria that could settle on them. Dental sealants can help both children and adults but the earlier you get them the more effective they are in helping teeth remain cavity-free.
Fun Fact: Sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of decay by nearly 80% in molars!
